Green Shirt
Wore a green shirt today
As if to say
I wish
I was Irish.
Truth is, I’m not.
I’m a rather proud Scot
But I’ll still wear the green to be stylish.

If this is an autobiographical poem, I must correct your genealogy. You are Irish even if the surname has been changed through marriage to the English (Payne) and then to the Swiss (Bonjour). Your maternal great-grandparents were named Nugent. If I am one fourth Irish, you’ve got to be at least one eighth Irish. Your father’s side is a little more diverse. And you can still wear green if you wear a tartan. Guess you can tell you got my “Irish UP”.
Of course I’m Irish. But I’m just more Scottish. Thanks for chiming in.
